The Distances Between Us

360 SEK

The Distances Between Us is a visual investigation of cemetery markers used to describe the anonymous deceased. Borrowing its structure from Barthe’s Camera Lucida, the first half of the book contains photographs of elaborately carved stones labeled father and mother. These markers glow in the theatrical light of the golden hour; love for the lost is evident in the careful treatment of each stone and the language that they bear. This familial intimacy disappears in the latter half of the book, which culls black and white photographs of numbered markers made of concrete and steel. In these photographs, shot in hidden cemeteries that serve state-run hospitals, jails and schools, relationships are erased to reveal bureaucratic motives to erase individual identity and sanitize responsibility.

Performing Grounds

320 SEK

The photographic series Performing Grounds shows accidental and random traces of human actions found in public and private spaces, architectures and places that once were alive and now are silent.
The echo of the actions persists in future moments and the space alteration becomes the documentation of human performance, the photography being in turn a document of the document, a dimming reverberation of a time that will never return.
One of the strongest fate of human condition, the expiring of existence, is made evident through the landscapes, as they would be “leftovers”; residues imbued with the melancholy of the accidental.

”It all started on my second trip to Bamako,Mali in 2007. The first one was in august 1998. In 9 years the face of Bamako had totally changed. Asphalt roads, chinese motorbikes and those strange cars everywhere. I was totally obsessed by those cars. I wanted to have my eyes only for them and their urban environment. They had to be the only character in my frame. For me those pictures are not landscape pictures. They are portrait pictures shot in cities…"

Voyage Voyage

Voyage Voyage was made from the window of the last car at the back of a train, during daily commutes to and from work. A mirror effect was added to the landscape, in order to create both a repetition and an anomaly. This is a series about the strategies we find to sublimate the routine (in French: le ”train-train”).

”Fourteen tons of sulphur are produced every day at Kawah Ijen. The refined product is later exported, mainly to China, but also to Southeast Asia and several other countries around the globe. Sulphur is a key material in
the production of vulcanised rubber, refined sugar and sulphuric acid, and can be found in medicines, cosmetics, matches and fertilisers. To these industries the miners remain faceless. These men are at the bottom of the chain, paying the highest price. Their life expectancy is, at most, 50 years. This is the world they live in. These are the miners of Kawah Ijen.”

”The institutional navigation on Garda lake is active
from March to October. During the winter months the
ferries sleeps in the shipyards or moored in some port.
Also ticket booths, located in major docks on the shores of the lake, remains closed. These booths are small anonymous prefabricated buildings, located nearby the docks, and in summer are visited by thousands of tourists.
Then comes the winter. The winter is all a different story. Most of the small towns on the lake are semi-deserts, ghost towns. The wind is cold, it gets dark early and the waters appear more sinister.”

"I have with this book tried to put the spotlight on one of my architectural heros. One that in my opinion is far too forgotten. For a very long time Georg Varhelyis architecture have interested me and I have had the idea for a while to collect his works in a book. My first contact with Georg's architecture came through his iconic high rise building in Björkhagen. When I later discovered that another one of my favorite buildings in Stockholm, Bergshamra Church, also was designed by Georg I started my research properly to get started on a book. Countless hours have been spent on research at the Architecture and design center in Stockholm. After some time I got in contact with Georg's children and interviewed them in the hope to write a biography. Instead it became conversation about George as a person, father and architect. This book is not an attempt to reproduce everything that George has done or to give all the facts and answers, but to open up an interest in one of Sweden's real architectural stars."

The Photographs are shot within the close proximity of where I have lived the past ten years. I started to take the photographs shortly after moving to Aspudden, a borough of Stockholm. The pictures are shot as a response to the striking dominance of Nature and the lack of commerce. The drive behind this series was to return to a way of approaching photography that I had prior to my Fine Arts Education. Back when I intuitively took a picture that appealed to me without it being weighed by educated consideration. Granted this series is framed by a theme. That is, to make visible and to gestalt a relationship between the natural and urban landscape, but without consciously looking for pictures. Instead, deliberately trying to discover these subjects as if they are being seen by a guest or a tourist; for the first time.

The dailiness of living is never that exotic. It is rather blinded by the familiar and filled with daily routines. The subjects that appealed to me were caught on the way to the subway or out jogging or when I left off my children to daycare. Then, only caught in memory for later use, when the light, the season and the weather fit. Using a large format camera it could take a year before the memory of the moment and the shot were possible to unite. Should I not be attentive to the probable moment another year could pass.

During the ten plus years this project has progressed many things have happened, both in my own life and in the landscape. In the beginning I lived alone, now we are four. My partner, our two daughters and I. My address has moved around to different residencies in the other southern boroughs of Stockholm such as Fruängen, Årsta and now Hammarbyhöjden. I have also lived a period in Tokyo’s Mukojima district. To photograph my surroundings close to home has now become an ingrained habit. I do it continually as part of my daily life.

"I was inspired on my drives through Wisconsin by deer stands, and began having conversations with hunters about the tradition of hunting in their families. Some people described building the stands as something permanent that could be passed to the next generation, especially sons who would inherit the land. I was anticipating the birth of my own son and thinking about my legacy to him, so this idea resonated strongly with me... When I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011, my work on hide was put on hold. I was 32 years old and had a 3-month-old baby at home. Having to face mortality so unexpectedly made me come back to the project with a new perspective on the ideas of permanence and impermanence."
